Break your form into steps

Split a long form across several screens, and decide where ticket selection sits.

A form with twenty questions on one screen loses people. Steps break it into a few short screens with a progress indicator.

Steps

  1. Open Form builder and go to step 2 Form steps.
Form builder step 2 with the list of form steps and an add button
Form builder step 2 with the list of form steps and an add button
  2. Add a step and name it. Names are shown to registrants, so use plain words: "About you", "Your session choices", "Payment".
  3. Drag to reorder, or delete a step you do not need.
  4. Assign fields to steps in 4 Form fields — see Edit a question.

Where ticket selection goes

In Form settings you choose whether the ticket step comes Before the form fields or After the form fields.

Before — they pick and pay first. Best for paid events: you find out immediately whether they will pay, and questions come after commitment.

After — they answer everything, then pick a ticket. Best when the answers decide the ticket, or for free events where there is nothing to pay.

How many steps

Two to four. One step is fine for a short free form.

Group by topic, not by length: everything about the person on one step, everything about their choices on another. A step with one question feels like an obstacle.

Put your most-likely-to-be-abandoned questions last. If someone drops out on the final step you still have their name and email, and you can follow up.

What happens next

The public form shows one step at a time with progress. Answers are only saved when they finish, so someone who abandons halfway is not a registrant.

Steps can be skipped automatically based on earlier answers — see Show and hide questions with conditional logic.

Common problems

A field is on the wrong step. Fields are assigned in the field settings, not by dragging between steps.

A step is empty for some people. Every field on it is restricted to attendee types that person is not. Either move a field or use logic to skip the step.

Nobody gets past step 2. A required field on that step is failing validation. Test it yourself.

You want them to review before submitting. There is no built-in summary step. Use the success message to confirm what they chose — see Submit button, success message and redirect.
